BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) is one form of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). Other forms include thermal and mechanical systems. They all serve the same purpose, storing energy for later use, with the difference being that BESS uses battery cells to store this energy. BESS is the fastest-growing of these technologies, and its installed capacity continues to climb as electrification spreads. How it works Battery Energy Storage Systems connect and seamlessly interact with the grid as well as the end-user's property. They charge whilst energy prices are low, typically during off-peak hours when demand is low, or when renewable production is high, such as during sunny or windy periods. This stored energy is then discharged during peak hours or when energy prices are higher, helping to reduce costs for the user and ease pressure on the grid at times when demand is greatest. This all happens automatically. Intelligent software known as the energy management system (EMS) continuously monitors electricity prices, grid conditions, and on-site consumption, deciding in real time when to charge and when to discharge. For the user, there is nothing to operate and nothing to monitor. The system runs quietly in the background, making these decisions many times a day to optimise energy usage.
